Why One-for-One?

A September article in the New York Times (“In Connecticut, A Wealth Gulf Divides Schools”) is just the most recent depiction of the consequences the extreme wealth gap in Fairfield County has on high school education and, as a result, college readiness.

The article describes how the Fairfield and Bridgeport school districts, despite their close proximity, epitomize the divide in educational opportunity across the county. Several facts from this arbitrary, yet evocative, comparison tell the story: the relative high school graduation rate is 94% for the Fairfield School District and 63% for Bridgeport’s; relative average SAT scores (out of 1600) are 1100 and 700; relative median household income: $117,000 and $35,000.
